"Will Ho Bin get into Rijksakademie Residency in 2026?"

Artist residencies have become essential in shaping the trajectory of contemporary artists—offering not only space and time to work, but the opportunity to integrate into unfamiliar environments, share processes, and engage in dialogue across disciplines and geographies. For many, residencies function as a temporary home—an anchor in the often precarious conditions of artistic labor. As Ho Bin Kim currently undertakes a residency here at Ruang Mes 56 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, he reflects on what it means to move through these temporary spaces and how they interlace with ambition, uncertainty, and artistic growth.

At the heart of this reflection is the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam—one of the world’s most prestigious residencies. With only 50 spots and over 1,600 applicants each year, the competition is fierce. Artists are allowed to apply only three times in their lifetime. One Korean artist is selected annually, funded by the Arts Council Korea.

Ho Bin has already applied twice. Most Korean recipients are in their 30s and plus, backed by institutions and extensive experience. Still in his 20s, Ho Bin chooses to apply again—knowing it will be his final chance.

Some may call him reckless, overestimating his ability. Some may call him resolute, choosing to challenge the status quo.

Nonetheless, Ho Bin will apply again, so the question is, "Will Ho Bin get into Rijksakademie Residency in 2026?"
